March Madness has made its way to Congress.
Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., has officially opened first-round voting for his second annual “Egregious Eight” tournament, the product of his weekly efforts — dubbed #PorkChops — to call out wasteful government spending.
On his congressional website, voters can choose which project they think is the worst waste of taxpayer dollars. The process parallels the actual NCAA Elite Eight — thus, the conclusion of first round voting ends Sunday.
One example is a $1.4 million research program studying if stressed-out monkeys with access to cocaine are vulnerable to addiction to the drug. Another is $400,000 that taxpayers spent for the Alaska National Guard to be the lead sponsor in the Iron Dog snowmobile race.
