A handful of newsies, foodies and sports stars — including Cokie Roberts, Mike Isabella and Ryan Zimmerman — have gotten on board, literally, the “Stuff the Bus” campaign. The cause showcases a vintage bus stopping at District restaurants all this week, seeking canned goods and cash to benefit D.C. Central Kitchen.
The bus and big names came together thanks to Venga’s Winston Lord who, when trying to think of a way to promote his company’s new mobile app, found inspiration in the late ’90s Dutch pop group Vengaboys and their “We like to Party” video, which featured a bus. Seriously.
“I was just like, ‘this is too funny and too coincidental,'” Lord told Yeas & Nays. Some late night shopping on Craigslist turned into a real life $1,000 purchase of the 1975 Ford Superior bus. And since Venga is an app that connects users with restaurants, it was decided that the bus would be stuffed with food (and some local celebrities too.)
“Everyone I asked said yes and was happy to do it,” Lord explained, also recruiting Fox News Channel’s Ed Henry, chef Spike Mendelsohn, Chef Jose Andres, ABC’s Jonathan Karl and retired Redskin Darrell Green to appear in a campaign to promote the charity event.
The drive ends Friday with the schedule posted at www.StuffTheBus.com.
