“I’m a registered Republican, I only seem liberal because I believe that hurricanes are caused by high barometric pressure and not gay marriage.”

Actor Jeff Daniels as broadcast journalist Will McAvoy in the first teaser for Aaron Sorkin‘s new HBO series “Newsroom.” The clip shows McAvoy in full meltdown mode. He tells a gymnasium full of college kids that America is in fact not the greatest country in the world, and then has to deal with the fallout. (Hence the above explanation of his political ideology). While MSNBC’s Chris Matthews was used as fodder for the TV series and his son actor Thomas Matthews appears on the show, McAvoy’s defiant behavior more so reminds us of “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski‘s brave refusal in 2007 to read a news story about celebutante Paris Hilton, while his freak-out brings to mind Keith Olbermann‘s entire career.
