The New York City doctor diagnosed with Ebola last week has been upgraded from “serious” to “serious but stable” condition, health officials reported Saturday.
The diagnosis of Dr. Craig Spencer, who contracted Ebola while treating patients in the West African nation of Guinea, resulted in the governors of New York and New Jersey instituting quarantines on travelers who were exposed to Ebola in West Africa.
Spencer’s girlfriend remains quarantined in her apartment, and the doctor is the only patient known to have Ebola in the city.
There have been nearly 14,000 total cases of Ebola, all but a handful in West Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost 5,000 have died from the virus.
Only two Americans have contracted the virus in the United States, and both recovered.
The virus can only be transmitted through bodily fluids, health officials say.
