Scott Walker leans in to 2016 with ‘527’ fundraising committee

Fresh off of a well-received speech in Iowa on Saturday, Gov. Scott Walker is taking another step toward a likely presidential campaign.

The Wisconsin Republican announced Tuesday a new committee, Our American Revival, that will enable him to raise money and promote his potential candidacy in advance of an official announcement later this year.

“Our American Revival encompasses the shared values that make our country great; limiting the powers of the federal government to those defined in the Constitution while creating a leaner, more efficient, more effective and more accountable government to the American people,” Walker said in a statement to the Washington Post, which broke the story.

The announcement follows a strong showing by Walker in Des Moines, where he spoke Saturday at Rep. Steve King’s Freedom Summit along with a crowd of other potential presidential candidates, and marks the latest major step toward a presidential campaign for Walker. The Wisconsin governor has also begun to assemble a team for his likely campaign, including former Republican National Committee political director Rick Wiley as Walker’s would-be campaign manager.

A committee will enable Walker to immediately begin raising money from donors. Although Walker took a different route than some other Republicans, opting for a “527” committee instead of a leadership political action committee, there will not be much practical difference.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was the first Republican to announce a leadership PAC and has been striving since then to raise money at a fast clip, encouraging donors to contribute as much as $500,000. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie this week announced his own leadership PAC.
