Lonely City?: Matchmaker to D.C. singles: Put down that iPhone and smile

She says she’s not quite as blunt as Patti Stanger, TV’s “Millionaire Matchmaker,” but the District’s version, DC Matchmaking owner Michelle Jacoby still likes to dole out some pretty honest dating advice.

“I think the problem with D.C. is that everyone walks around with their faces in their iPhones and people have blinders on,” she said to those who diss District dating.

Like her reality show counterpart, Jacoby works closely with a small pool of clients and helps them find love. With that expertise, here’s what she tells area singles:

Her biggest advice for guys: Man up.

“I would like to say this to all the men who are reading this — treat the women you date like you’d want someone to treat your sister.” And then another pet peeve: “If you say you are going to call a woman, please call her. There is no rule that says you have to wait five days.”

And for women: Expect better.

“Unfortunately, a lot of women don’t feel good enough about themselves to expect to be treated beautifully,” she noted, saying that to meet men, a smile is always an effective device.

And for those who still may find themselves alone on Sunday’s big romantic holiday, she had this bit of advice.

“I think you should be with your best friends,” she said. “I think you should do something to celebrate the love in your life even though it’s not romantic love.”
