Ryan: Obama wants to keep energy ‘in the ground’

BALTIMORE — House Speaker Paul Ryan on Friday condemned the Obama administration’s move to ban coal mining leases on public land.

“President Obama has made it absolutely clear what he plans to do with America’s energy — keep it in the ground,” Ryan, who is meeting with Republicans in Baltimore at the GOP’s annual retreat, said in a statement. “Coal on federal land belongs to all Americans, but the president is denying people access to their own abundant, low-cost energy source.”

Ryan said the move would eliminate jobs and economic growth. He pledged the House GOP would “continue to fight back,” against the administration’s efforts to reduce coal mining.

House Republicans have passed several bills aimed at rolling back Obama’s EPA regulations, including a Dec. 1, 2015 vote to block EPA rules that cut emissions from coal-fired power plants.
