Prince George’s Council likely to OK new resources director

The Prince George’s County Council is expected to approve a new Department of Environmental Resources director today, according to a spokesman for County Executive Jack Johnson.

Johnson nominated Charles Wilson to replace Donna Wilson, who resigned last December. Charles Wilson has served as interim director since last December. The two are not related.

“He has worked in DER before and he has 30 years of experience with Prince George’s County government,” said Michael Herman, Johnson’s chief of staff. “There is nobody more qualified and more committed to the Prince George’s County Government than Charlie Wilson.”

DER’s mission is to “respond to the needs of the public by improving the quality of life through the enhancement and cultivation of the natural and created environment,” according to the county’s Web site.

From 1976 to 1989, Wilson worked in the Prince George’s sheriff’s office, doing mostly information technology, Herman said. Wilson moved to DER in 1989, where he dealt with code compliance, site development and construction of residential and commercial properties, among other things.

Herman said Wilson has been director of the county’s Office of Information Technology Communications since 2004. According to Herman, Wilson has improved the county’s Web site and implemented the county’s intranet system.

Johnson spokesman Jim Keary said DER deals with trash pickup, permitting for construction and floodwater management.

“It was because of his management skills in DER that he was seen as good director material and he showed that as the director of the office of information technology,” Keary said.

Keary said Wilson will work to reorganize DER and make it more efficient.

Wilson is scheduled to be sworn into his new position at a ceremony Friday.
