Fournier: Hillary Clinton is ‘undermining the trust’ people have in government

National Journal reporter Ron Fournier told the hosts of “Morning Joe” Monday that Clinton is hurting the public’s trust in government, after it became clear that the State Department said Hillary Clinton failed to turn over 15 work-related emails last week.

“The single biggest issue we have in politics right now is the public doesn’t trust politicians, doesn’t trust government,” Fournier said.

“It’s incumbent on our leaders, whether they’re Democrats, Republicans, independents, to make sure they earn that trust,” he said. “And Hillary Clinton, for all her strengths, is really undermining the trust, not just in her and not just in the Democratic Party, but in politics in general.”

The Obama administration and the State Department have failed to fully investigate the issue despite saying they are “disgusted” with her disregard for the rules.

“Well, I haven’t heard the president rebuke her. I haven’t seen his State Department investigate this,” he said. “So I’ve got to assume that the Obama White House is complicit in this lack of transparency and in this rule breaking and whatever else might be going on that we don’t know about yet.”

Fournier said he also would love to know whether any of the undisclosed emails had any information about donors to the Clinton Foundation.

“Until we know there’s been an independent vetting of her server, we are always going to wonder whether or not there was a blur,” Fournier said.
