Another D.C. bakery dominates ‘Cupcake Wars’

Yes, yes, we know there’s a cupcakery on every corner of Washington at this point, but that doesn’t mean that the Sweet Lobby’s win on Sunday’s “Cupcake Wars” warrants any less attention. Winnette McIntosh Ambrose and her brother Timothy McIntosh of the Barrack’s Row bakery made their television debut on the show, baking in a Chinese New Year’s themed competition.

“It’s three rounds — the first round we did really well, the second round we didn’t finish decorating our cupcakes because we had a lot of really intricate decorations…and we brought it home in the final round,” owner McIntosh Ambrose told Yeas & Nays.

It’s science that is the siblings secret recipe. Both McIntosh Ambrose and McIntosh hold engineering degress from MIT and have used their science smarts to make delicious cupcakes, macarons (spelled the French way), madeleines and shortbread at their Capitol Hill shop. “We understand the fundamentals behind baking, baking as a science is not new to us, so I think we sort of leveraged that technical background and creativity,” McIntosh Ambrose said of their “Cupcake Wars” win.
