Sean Casten‘s office announced that his 17-year-old daughter Gwen died Monday.
His family declined to share additional details about the cause of death and requested privacy “during this heartbreaking time.”

“This morning, Congressman Casten’s beloved daughter, Gwen (17), passed away. The Casten family requests privacy, and we will be issuing no further comment during this heartbreaking time,” a tweet from his account reads.
Police arrived at Casten’s Downers Grove home around 6:48 a.m. Monday and quickly concluded she was deceased, authorities told the Chicago Tribune. An investigation into the cause of death is underway.
Earlier this month, Casten (D-IL) heaped praise on his daughter, hailing her activism against gun violence.
“I have both tremendous pride that my daughter took the initiative to organize … and tremendous shame that we as a country are making it the responsibility of children aged 15, 16, and 17 to do what sitting United States senators don’t have the courage to do themselves,” he told Newsy.

If he wins the contest, it would be his third term in Congress, and if Newman wins, it would be her second term. The primary is slated to take place on June 28. Newman issued her condolences to Casten following the news of his daughter’s death.
“My heart breaks for the Casten family for the devastating loss of their daughter. My prayers are with Sean, Kara, and the entire Casten family,” she said in a statement.

In February, Casten expressed excitement that this election cycle was going to be the first that Gwen could vote for him.
“It’s a big year in the Casten household! Sean’s daughter will be voting in her first election and was able to sign the petition for her dad,” his campaign tweeted.
