Democrats have cultivated a base of voters that hate America, which is why the party gets squeamish at any show of patriotism that isn’t soaked in progressive talking points.
A Cygnal poll for America’s semiquincentennial (or, more simply, America’s 250th birthday) asked people the following question: “After 250 years as a nation, do you believe the United States continues to be a force for good in the world?” Most demographics agreed that America was a force for good, spanning across all income levels, locations (rural, suburban, urban), and relationship statuses. Voters who backed President Donald Trump in 2024 were plus 86, and swing voters were plus 25.

There were only a few demographics whose view of the U.S. was negative at all: Women under the age of 55 were minus 11, women who went to college were minus 2, and black people were minus 24. Those three demographics are ones that you would typically associate with the Democratic Party.
But the two most negative categories of Americans when it came to that poll were not based on gender, race, or education. Democrats were a whopping minus 43 on the idea that America is a force for good in the world, and voters who backed Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 were minus 45. Just a quarter of Democrats and Harris voters think America is a force for good, while nearly 40% in both categories think America is “definitely” not.
That number cannot be explained just by black voters or young women. It shows that Democrats are attracting America haters of all demographics, despite those America haters being a minority in almost every one of their categories. Being a self-hating American is a core trait of Democratic politics.
This is reflected in how Democrats talk about America or patriotism. You may recall the Black Lives Matter summer of 2020, where Democrats regularly argued that America is irredeemably racist and that no one should stand for the American flag and the national anthem. More recently, it has been shown through the variety of protests from Democratic activists, where they constantly wave flags of other countries, such as Mexico, or fake countries, such as “Palestine.” Rarely do you ever see American flags at Democratic protests.

It is so rare, in fact, that Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) had to beg her supporters to bring American flags to future protests last year. “Everybody has all their different signs, all their different issues that they care about,” Slotkin said. “Bring an American flag. Wear the red, white, and blue.”
Democratic politicians know that their anti-American position is not popular, as the Cygnal poll shows, which is why Slotkin asked her supporters to pretend they like being American. The reality, though, is that Democrats have created a party centered on hating their country, and that shows through their actions and the actions of their protester base.
