Pop star Ke$ha brushes her teeth with Jack Daniels, has sexual relations with ghosts and–as of this weekend–tweets about the Farm Bill.
On Friday, the “Die Young” singer tweeted, “Stop the dangerous #KingAmendment that would wipe out animal protection laws #FarmBill.” Ke$ha’s plea links to a form letter on the website of the Humane Society of the United States, a group that’s fighting the amendment over animal rights issues.
The King amendment, named after Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, is attached to the House version of the Farm Bill and was written in response to California’s Proposition 2. That law ensures that farm animals–including chickens–are able to turn around, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs and goes into effect in 2015. Chickens were protected further when California state lawmakers passed legislation that said that all eggs sold in the state must be governed by Prop. 2.
King, who represents the largest egg-producing state in the country, said that California can do what it wants to do. “But don’t be telling the states that are producing a product that’s already approved by the USDA or the FDA how to produce that product,” he told the Los Angeles Times last month. Thus, his amendment would block states from applying their standards to agriculture products made in other states.
Groups like the Humane Society of the United States worry that the amendment, if passed with the Farm Bill, will have much broader implications. “It could nullify not only measures relating to animal welfare–like farm animal confinement, horse slaughter, puppy mills, and shark finning–but a wide range of other concerns including food safety, child labor and the environment,” the Humane Society’s website warned.
Fighting against an amendment in the House version of the Farm Bill might be a tad wonky for Ke$ha, but this isn’t her first foray into the political. In the past, she’s expressed that she’s pro gay marriage. In January she performed at a Recording Industry event over President Obama’s inauguration. She’s also previously partnered with Rock the Vote.
