Boos rained on the stage Wednesday night as Sen. Ted Cruz made pro-Israel comments during a conference for Middle Eastern Christians.

Speaking at the In Defense of Christians Summit in Washington, D.C., Cruz reportedly was jeered as he remarked on the bond between Christians and the Jewish people. The Daily Caller wrote late Wednesday night that his statement “Christians have no greater ally than Israel” kicked off a series of a disapproving responses from the crowd that culminated in the Texas senator leaving the podium.

“I will say this: I am saddened to see that some here, not everyone, but some here are so consumed with hate. I will say this: If you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you,” Cruz said in a video from EWTN, before walking off.

Cruz later added in a statement that “a vocal and angry minority of attendees” was to blame for the racket.

“Tonight in Washington should have been a night of unity as we came together for the inaugural event for a group that calls itself ‘In Defense of Christians.’ Instead, it unfortunately deteriorated into a shameful display of bigotry and hatred,” Cruz said.

According to In Defense of Christians, the group is “a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to heighten awareness among policymakers and the general public of the existence of ancient and often persecuted minority communities in the Middle East, particularly Christians.”
