Colbert addresses surprise ‘active shooter drill’ at Florida school

Stephen Colbert adopted his usual sarcastic tone on “The Colbert Report” Wednesday where he addressed the surprise “active shooter drill” at a Florida school that terrified — and subsequently outraged — children and parents.

Last Thursday, police entered Jewett Middle Academy in Winter Haven with AR-15 rifles as part of a “lockdown active shooter drill.”

In an effort to maintain the surprise element and prepare the children for a real emergency, the police neglected to notify the young students and their parents beforehand.

On his show, Colbert jokingly agreed with the Winter Haven Police Department’s logic behind the drill.

“There is no advanced notice in a real-life emergency, which is why I never warn my staff about our fire drills,” explained the comedian. “I don’t even warn myself. I leave a pile of oily rags next to the furnace and I wait for the drill to start when it’s ready. We’re actually on our fifth studio here.”

The funnyman also commented on the fact that some students contacted their parents via text message during the drill out of fear.

“Typical teens,” Colbert said. “Can’t even stop texting at gunpoint.”
