Taco Bell went dark across the breadth of the Internets Tuesday as part of a social media campaign to draw attention to a new app.
The indispensable chain eatery replaced its website with a blank, black page, and its social media accounts have blacked-out avatars and cover photos. Its Twitter account has been scrubbed. All of this is in coordination with the hashtag #OnlyInTheApp, directing meximelt enthusiasts to a new utility being released Tuesday that will allow individuals to remotely order, pay for, and pick up their food.
T-Bell’s website as of Tuesday morning — gone.
Same for its Tumblr.
Its Facebook page has a minimalist approach.
And its Twitter page is pretty much scrubbed OH MY GOODNESS WHAT IS HAPPENING.
The most informative of T-Bell’s blank accounts is its Instagram profile, which has six photos that spell “TACO BELL ISN’T ON INSTAGRAM IT’S #ONLYINTHEAPP.” The presentation, resembling a digitized ransom note, is mildly disconcerting.
Instagrammers took all of this as an apocalyptic cue.
“WTF DOES THIS MEAN !!!!!!!!” one user measuredly wrote.
“Taco Bell isn’t on Instagram anymore what is life,” another user insightfully asked.
Some other panicked messages include: “[They’re] done with instagram kill me now,” “omg they aren’t on insta anymore,” and “NOOOOOOOO,” “Nonono,” “no,” and “Nooooooo,” all sequentially.
“Did they get hacked?” someone asked. “Someone help.”
That someone is here, and it’s the new Live Más app. Users can log in, register or connect through Facebook at the gate:
And from there, explore what the menu has to offer:
Taco Bell gets major points for making the checkout line look so appetizing.
Users are shown a map of proximate Taco Bell locations and taken to a standard payment screen. Since it’s 11:30 in the morning as of this writing, it’s too early to test drive this thing. But from layout alone, it’s A+.
And that’s enough to compensate for Taco Bellackout across the web.
