Rep. Elise Stefanik: Millennials are up for grabs in 2016 election

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) is the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress and, accordingly, is leading the charge for the GOP’s appeal to millennials.

Stefanik, 30, appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Tuesday morning to discuss her new place in Congress and the hearing she will hold later today for the Republican Policy Committee on reaching out to and connecting with millennials.

“The GOP leadership in particular has recognized that we have to do better in communicating our message to millennials and young women,” Stefanik told the Morning Joe hosts.

Millennials, who now make the largest generation in the workforce, are “up for grabs” in the upcoming election cycle.

Stefanik pointed out the generation is an “important voting bloc” that is, in a good way, “disrupting the private sector.”

When asked though how the GOP can seize Millennials loyalty when they are typically seen to oppose progressive social issues such as gay marriage, Stefanik pointed out that Millennials can’t be pegged so easily.

“There’s no doubt about it, the poll on marriage equality has shifted at historic levels,” answered Stefanik. “Millennials are actually slightly more pro-life than the previous generation…[we need to] really focus on economic empowerment, on individual liberties, on constitutional liberties…those are the issues that resonate with Millennials.”
