Patriots fans may be mostly Democrats, but this just might get them to vote for Chris Christie in 2016.
The New Jersey governor and likely GOP presidential candidate defended Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady amid the renewed “DeflateGate” controversy, calling the media hype surrounding Brady’s likely knowledge of the deflated footballs “way, way overblown.”
“I think there’s a little bit too much attention on this, ” Christie, who is memorably a Dallas Cowboys fan, said during an interview with IJ Review Thursday. “I mean, I don’t think anybody is really trying to say that Tom Brady won four Super Bowls or became a future Hall of Famer because the balls were a little under-inflated.”
“I think the media and others love for somebody who’s married to a beautiful model, who’s richer than you can imagine, and who’s a future Hall of Famer — to take a couple of shots at him?” Christie continued. “People love that every once in a while. I think it’s way, way overblown.”
Brady made his first public comments on the newly-released report during his remarks at Salem State University in Massachusetts Thursday.
“Our owner commented on it yesterday. It’s only been 30 hours so I haven’t had much time to digest it fully but when I do I’ll be sure to let you know how I feel about it,” he told the crowd when asked about the revelation in the “Deflategate” saga, adding that it has “absolutely not” detracted from the celebration of his Super Bowl win.
