According to the University of Connecticut’s mission statement, the school is dedicated to the principles of “freedom of academic inquiry and expression” by embracing “diversity and cultivate leadership” —  but now that inclusiveness and freedom includes segregation.

Campus Reform reported on Saturday that UConn is building new dorms that will be segregated solely for black men.

The ScHOLA²RS House is a new initiative to improve the educational standards of black male students by surrounding them in a ‘safe space’ filled only with fellow black men.

“Uconn ScHOLA2RS House is a scholastic initiative to groom, nurture, and train the next generation of leaders to address grand challenges in society through the promotion of academic success in undergraduate programs at the University of Connecticut and in competitive graduate programs,” said the school’s website.

The university website continued that by creating a place where black men would only be surrounded other black men, they’d be inspired to succeed and wouldn’t feel the pressures of outsiders.

“ScHOLA²RS House is a Learning Community designed to support the scholastic efforts of male students who identify as African[-]American/Black through academic and social/emotional support, access to research opportunities, and professional development,” the website continued. “The intent of this Learning Community is to increase the retention and persistence of students using educational and social experiences to enhance their academic success at UConn and beyond in graduate and professional school placement.”

Campus faculty hope that by allowing black men to congregate and live amongst themselves, they will be able to talk about their experiences and graduate at a higher rate.

This is not UConn’s first segregated learning initiative; they also have separate programs for Hispanic students and women in math.
