Ted Cruz cites ‘breathtaking’ support for presidential run, will make decision ‘shortly’

From the sound of it, Ted Cruz is feeling pretty good about 2016.

“I’ve been incredibly encouraged by the support I’ve seen,” Cruz said Saturday outside the Iowa Agricultural Summit in Des Moines, the Hill reports. “The support from the grassroots, frankly has been breathtaking, and the financial support we’ve received from Texas and all across the country. So it’s something I’m looking at closely, and I think that decision will be made shortly.”

At the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this month, Cruz sketched his potential campaign strategy, saying the nominee should pursue evangelical Christians and Reagan Democrats.

“We have to reassemble to old Reagan coalition,” he said. “The only way to do that is to bring together fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, and national security conservatives.”

“You need a candidate who will not only stand strong on economic growth, but also is willing to stand up for life and marriage,” he continued. “It means you need a candidate who will not only fight for our constitutional liberties, but also will lead in stopping ISIS and a nuclear Iran.”

In January, he confirmed that he is looking “very seriously” at a presidential run. “It’s certainly something I’m looking at very seriously, and I think we’re at a time of enormous challenge,” he told FOX & Friends. “We are starting a national debate this year about the direction of the Republican party and about the direction of the country. I think the challenges facing us — they’ve never been greater.”
