In response to the media’s “Republican War on Women” narrative, the House GOP Conference released a new video on Tuesday announcing its Women’s Policy Committee.
The committee’s “goal (is) raising the profile of GOP women in their roles as lawmakers, highlighting their diverse achievements and providing a unique, unified voice on a wide range of critically important issues,” reports The Hill. This response comes from weeks of attacks by Democrats. Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) will serve as committee chairwoman.
The committee will be able to counter current charges against the Republican agenda as supposedly being bad for women, and is poised to give credibility to efforts to fight the contraception mandate imposed by the White House’s health care reform legislation, because the message can be voiced by female Republican legislators. Republicans have tried to frame the contraception issue as an attack on religious liberty, as several religious institutions have taken the Obama Administration to court over the issue.
The two-minute video features over 20 House Republican women, who are on record in the video as saying why they support the Republican Party and its smaller government, lower taxes agenda.
“I have the privilege of being the youngest woman in Congress, and also the first Hispanic to represent Washington state in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) boasts in the video.
“We know what it is like to run a budget, a business and a family,” claims Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)
