Edward Snowden has a new accomplishment — a crawfish named after him.
German scientist Christian Lukhaup and two colleagues have identified a new species, Cherax snowden, that is found in West Papua, Indonesia.
The Cherax snowden is kept as a pet throughout Europe, East Asia, and America for its colors: usually green, orange, and yellow with orange tips or a greenish orange.
The scientists published their findings in the Aug. 24 issue of ZooKeys, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal.
“The new species is named after the [A]merican freedom fighter Edward Joseph Snowden. He is honored due to of his extraordinary achievements in defense of justice, and freedom,” Lukhaup wrote.
