Umpqua students, professors ‘felt safer’ with responsible gun owners on campus

Reuters is not known for being a conservative publication, but in an article on Monday the news agency effectively made the case for carrying firearms on college campuses.

In the article by Eric Johnson, students and teachers connected with Umpqua Community College, where Thursday’s massacre occurred, disclosed that many people on campus carry firearms despite the school’s “gun-free zone” policy.

It was not unusual for students to carry concealed handguns, although the two campus security guards were unarmed, Reuters reported.

When the college went on lockdown Thursday and the sounds of gunfire could be heard in the distance, one professor asked his students if anyone was carrying a gun.

“I raised my hand and said: ‘Don’t worry, nobody is coming through that door,'” said student John Parker, an Air Force veteran, who was carrying a firearm on his hip.

The teacher wasn’t alone in feeling relieved that someone in his class was carrying a pistol.

“It does not surprise me that students carry on campus. Honestly, knowing that there are responsible gun owners on campus made me feel safer that day,” said Jared Norman, a student at Umpqua.

When there’s a killer on the loose, the ideals of a liberal professor won’t protect anyone as well as a good guy with a gun.
