Speaker chides Senate Dems on student loans

Speaker John Boehner’s office is chiding Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP’s student loan compromise, noting that approximately half of all recent college grads are unemployed.

House Republicans passed a bill  in April that would extend current student loan interest rates beyond July 1 when they are set to expire.

The GOP promised cuts to what they termed an Obamacare “slush fund” to offset continuing the current student-loan subsidy.

Republicans say “the ball is still in Senate Democrats’ court” because they say they have acted, but the Democrats have refused.

“If the president and Senate Democratic leaders prefer a different approach, then the onus is on them to offer a solution that can pass both chambers. … This issue can be resolved quickly if the Democrats come to the table and offer a responsible solution, and we hope they will,” Boehner said last week.
