A San Diego college student has won a battle in the name of free speech after being ordered by his apartment complex to remove the American flag flying from his balcony.

Brad Smith, a sophomore at San Diego State University, was ordered to remove the flag via a notice from the community managers of his apartment complex, Boulevard 63 Apartments, reports 10 News.

“We were then told that it was for political reasons and that the flag could offend foreign people that live here, foreign exchange students,” Smith said of the managers’ response to his inquiry about the notice.

While a community manager maintained that no banners nor flags are permitted outside apartments, Melanie Flaherty, who represents the owner of the complex, confirmed that the property “allow[s] state and country flags.”

The apartment complex rules state that “no signs or other personal property may be kept outside the premises.” Managers are directed to decide what property is “permissible and acceptable.”

Flaherty assured that these regulations would be altered and called the spat between Smith and the managers a “misunderstanding.”

Undoubtedly, the college student is proudly flying his stars and stripes now that the “misunderstanding” has been resolved in favor of patriotism.
