Oklahoma governor bars child gender transitions at OU and calls for statewide ban

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a law Tuesday, preventing the University of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital from providing gender transition services such as surgery and puberty-blocking drugs to minors.

Senate Bill 3XX prohibits OU facilities from bestowing on minors “any health care to facilitate the transitioning of a patient’s assigned gender identity on the patient’s birth certificate, to the gender identity experienced and defined by the patient.”

Oklahoma Governor Stitt”No monies shall be budgeted or expended by the Authority for the benefit of any facility owned by the University Hospitals Authority or University Hospitals Trust performing ‘gender reassignment medical treatment’, as defined in this section, on children under eighteen (18) years of age,” reads the bill.

The law doesn’t include mental health services, medications to treat depression or anxiety, or those who are intersex.

The new measure went into effect immediately upon signing.

“By signing this bill today we are taking the first step to protect children from permanent gender transition surgeries and therapies. It is wildly inappropriate for taxpayer dollars to be used for condoning, promoting, or performing these types of controversial procedures on healthy children,” said Stitt.

He further added, “I am calling for the Legislature to ban all irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors when they convene next session in February 2023.”

“We cannot turn a blind eye to what’s happening all across our nation, and as governor I will not allow life-altering transition surgeries on minor children in the state of Oklahoma,” the governor continued.

The OU Children’s Hospital still features a section on its website devoted to gender affirmation services. According to the site, child patients are afforded options of “Pausing puberty to further explore gender,” “Managing gender-affirming hormone therapy,” and “Helping find surgeons who perform gender-affirming surgeries,” among others.
