Confucius says the Biden administration seems not to care about corrupt foreign influences on American society.
Alas, that’s no joke.
Biden’s Education Department plans to end all remaining investigations into foreign donations to American universities, even as experts say China continues to use “Confucius Institutes,” Chinese-backed cultural centers on college campuses, for academic and economic espionage and intellectual property theft.
The Trump administration wisely opened at least 19 so-called “Section 117 investigations” into such foreign (not just Chinese) gifts to see if schools were avoiding legally mandated reporting requirements that are intended to guard against foreign corruption. Already, the Biden administration had shut down the “China Initiative” that targeted actions of the (misnamed) People’s Republic, and, as reported by National Review’s Jimmy Quinn, has looked the other way as universities drastically reduced their reporting of all foreign gifts.
And now, Biden is shutting down all such inquiries under Section 117 while moving oversight of compliance from the Education Department’s legal team to its financial aid office.
BIDEN DOJ SCUTTLES TRUMP’S CHINA CRACKDOWN
It’s as if the Biden team actually welcomes sketchy foreign influence.
“The Biden Education Department’s closure of investigations into the failure of many colleges and universities to report, as required by federal law, their receipt of foreign gifts and contracts, including those possibly tied to the Chinese Communist Party, is disappointing but not unexpected,” said Bob Eitel, president of the Defense of Freedom Institute, an education- and labor-focused think tank. “With this action, the Biden administration has demonstrated for the American people that it simply does not understand the threat posed by the Chinese government to the United States. The administration’s decision is grossly negligent and highly irresponsible.”
That pretty much sums it up. Combined with what amounts to a neon welcome sign for illegal immigrants to cross our borders and remain in the country, and with Biden heavily restricting domestic energy production and distribution while begging foreigners to sell us more oil, it almost appears as if this president cares nothing about U.S. sovereignty.
On all these fronts, Biden is an absolute disgrace.
