On the eve of the Virginia gubernatorial election, former President Donald Trump tied himself to Glenn Youngkin and urged people to vote for the Republican nominee despite questioning the integrity of the state’s election system.
“The Fake News media, together with some of the perverts doing ads ad nauseam on primarily Fox (Fox shouldn’t take those ads!), are trying to create an impression that Glenn Youngkin and I are at odds and don’t like each other,” Trump said. “Importantly, this is not true, we get along very well together and strongly believe in many of the same policies. Especially when it comes to the important subject of education.”

Trump hypothesized the news media and “perverts” are trying to “convince people that we do not like each other” so that the former president’s base won’t show up to vote for Youngkin. He also cast doubt, without evidence, on the integrity of the election system in Virginia, where he lost by 10 points in 2020.
“I am not a believer in the integrity of Virginia’s elections, lots of bad things went on, and are going on. The way you beat it is to flood the system and get out and vote,” Trump said.
Trump’s statement is a gift to Virginia Democrats and their nominee, former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who have made Youngkin’s support from Trump a core campaign argument. McAuliffe was quick to pounce on Trump’s statement.
“Today Trump said that he and Glenn ‘get along very well together and believe in many of the same policies.’ We have rejected the racism, the hate, the division, and the lies of Donald Trump twice. And tomorrow, we will do it again,” McAuliffe said in a tweet.

Youngkin has not made Trump a significant part of his campaign and has kept him at arm’s length in the final weeks before Election Day. Youngkin told reporters last week that he had not recently talked to Trump.
Trump is reportedly planning to hold a tele-rally in support of Youngkin on Monday night.

“Remember this, Glenn Youngkin is a good man, a hardworking man, a successful man. He loves Virginia and wants to cut your taxes, save your children’s education, and many other very good things,” Trump said in his statement. “Terry McAuliffe is a low-life politician who lies, cheats, and steals. He was a terrible high-tax governor and would be, if elected, an even worse governor again.”
“I say to all of our millions of followers, don’t listen to the Fake News and misleading advertisements written largely by already-acknowledged perverts,” Trump said. “Get out and vote for a man who will be a great governor, Glenn Youngkin!”
