Navratilova: Lift dumbbells, not BlackBerries

So this is what a crowd of Washington, D.C., inside-the-Beltway policy wonks looks like,” said tennis legend Martina Navratilova Wednesday as she addressed an audience at AARP’s Global Health 08 Conference. Cautioning everyone against checking their BlackBerries, she added that the group “may have to have a little talk about the workaholic thing.”

All that work, she said, should be replaced with exercise — which was her topic, in fact, now that she’s become an AARP health and fitness ambassador.

“We have these wonderful bodies to take care of,” she said. “You can see I’ve let myself go since I stopped playing.”

She was joking, of course, flexing a still-impressive bicep while she said it.

Fran Drescher gave the conference’s keynote speech, highlighting her personal experiences with cancer. It was a short walk from the Mayflower Hotel, where the conference was held, to Morton’s The Steakhouse, where Drescher introduced her West Coast contingency to her East Coast contingency in between wine, martinis and steak filet sandwiches.
