Former Redskins salary cap analyst turned agent (actually director of football analytics for Priority Sports) J.I. Halsell said Washington is set up well with its finances — now and for the future.
You probably already know that the Redskins are in good cap shape. Most estimates put them around $40 million under the cap, which gives them the ability to fill needs in free agency and be creative when it comes to the draft.

Halsell, often heard locally on ESPN 980, said they can afford to sign a quarterback such as Kyle Orton and still trade up for Robert Griffin III.
And because of their cap situation, they’re able to keep a veteran such as Chris Cooley around (though there’s still a chance his contract will be restructured).
What Halsell doesn’t expect: a spending spree in free agency. Yes, he anticipates they’ll sign free agents, but, “I don’t think it will be like the old days where they’re buying up everybody. There’s always a risk when you start paying top of the market deals to guys.”
Also: Halsell, a native Washingtonian, votes “no” on any thoughts of Randy Moss to the Redskins.
“When you pair good young players with solid professional veterans, it goes a long way toward changing the culture. I think that will continue in veteran free agency,” he said.
Halsell also talks about Peyton Manning, LaRon Landry and more.
