Suspension from Terps results in his departure After declaring in March that he would return to the Maryland Terrapins for his junior year, Terrell Stoglin was suspended by the school for a year and will enter the NBA Draft.

Stoglin, who averaged 21.6 points per game last year to lead the ACC, met the Sunday night deadline to declare for the draft. On Monday morning, Maryland announced that Stoglin and teammate Mychal Parker had been suspended for a violation of the school’s student-athlete code of conduct. In early April, Parker tweeted his intention to transfer.

“Being a University of Maryland student-athlete carries a tremendous honor and responsibility,” Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. “As much as we appreciate the effort these two young men gave the program this season, they were unable to live up to that responsibility. We’re disappointed but hope they use this as a learning experience.”

A team source confirmed reports that the suspensions were “drug related.” Although not mandated by the NCAA, student athletes at Maryland are subject to drug testing.

Stoglin was recruited to Maryland by former coach Gary Williams and had a stormy relationship last season with predecessor Mark Turgeon, who benched the 6-foot-1 guard at the start of the Terps’ opener against UNC Wilmington and in the second half of at least two other games. After a loss to Duke in which he sat out the final minutes, Stoglin tweeted his dissatisfaction, then later removed the post and apologized.

The departure of Stoglin leaves rising sophomore guard Nick Faust as the top returning scorer (8.9 ppg). When healthy, junior Pe’Shon Howard was the starter at point guard for last year’s 17-15 squad, but his status is pending recovery from surgery to repair a torn ACL. In addition, Howard was arrested Sunday morning for disorderly conduct outside a College Park restaurant.

Immediate playing time is likely for versatile 6-8 perimeter threat Jake Layman. Incoming freshman point guards Seth Allen and Sam Cassell Jr. will get a chance to play as well. Without Stoglin, Turgeon also will look for frontcourt scoring from 7-1 sophomore Alex Len, 6-9 freshman Shaquille Cleare and 6-7 senior James Padgett.
