On Tuesday, Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen bemoaned the fate of two of his promising but unlucky young Terps, both hurt Saturday on the first play from scrimmage of their respective careers.
Inserted at defensive end against Morgan State, Marcus Whitfield (Northwest) blew out his knee making a tackle. Whitfield will require season-ending surgery to repair his torn ACL and MCL.

In addition, redshirt freshman C.J. Brown broke his collarbone on his first play at quarterback and will miss the rest of the year. Brown, who ran for 12 yards on the play, remained in the game for the rest of the series, throwing an incomplete pass.
Friedgen hopes to get medical redshirts for both players.
“Play one play and lose a whole year, that doesn’t seem fair in the second game of the year,” Friedgen said.
