It took eight weeks, but Bimbo finally has a nickname: Princess.
The greatest monkey in Baltimore history lives a life of luxury, as she lounges in a golden-yellow couch surrounded by plush blankets and in a cage just a few feet away from a television and plenty of worms to eat.
Bimbo last week went 9-4 picking NFL games ? a wining percentage of 69 percent, her highest yet. She celebrated her victory over Olympic figure skater Kimmie Meissner (7-6) and tie with Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis (9-4) by dressing as a princess for Halloween and eating her treats – cereal and worms.
Wearing a bright pink crown befitting a true princess, Bimbo mingled this week with her monkey friends Oogie, Zoey and Cocoa. She?s the most popular animal at Frisky?s Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary in Woodstock, and perhaps most intelligent after correctly predicting the winner of 62 of 116 NFL games, a winning percentage of 53.4 ? not bad for a monkey who had never watched a football game until a few weeks ago.
“She really liked her crown,” Colleen Layton-Robbins, Bimbo?s owner, said. “Between watching games and listening to the radio she has so many activities.”
Bimbo clearly has mastered her Wednesday morning routine. At 10 a.m., the 36-year-old who has the body of a 25-year-old according to Bimbo?s veterinarian, descends to the bottom of her cage and takes a seat on her couch and munches on a few worms provided to her by Joyce Dietsch, one of her care givers. It?s brain food, which she uses to give her all the energy she needs to grab the pennant of each team she believes will emerge victorious this weekend.
And here?s some NFL insider information that you won?t get from the “Monday Night Crew” of Ron Jaworski, Tony Kornheiser, and Mike Tirico: Bimbo senses tension in the Ravens? locker room, which explains why The Examiner?s pigskin-picking primate predicts a Steelers? victory on Monday Night Football.
This week Bimbo is challenging several of the city most popular morning radio personalities: Mickey Cucchiella of 98 Rock (97.9 FM), JoJo Girard of Mix 106.5 FM and Chris Emry from The Bay (100.7 FM). It?s hard rock, adult contemporary and classic rock against Bimbo, the Princess.
“I want to beat the monkey,” Girard said. “This is man versus primate. We?re talking about evolution here.”
