HBO’s Bill Maher is an outspoken critic of the Republican Party and, when Sen. Chuck Hagel appeared on the show Friday evening, the Nebraska senator hopped on the GOP-bashing bandwagon.
Hagel called the war in Iraq the “biggest foreign policy blunder in the history of our country,” and said that the Republican party has been “hijacked by incompetence.”

“We are not who we say we are,” said Hagel, adding that GOP incompetence is “what’s driven the Republican party right off the cliff.”
Hagel also took the Bush administration to task for sending Gen. David Petraeus to Capitol Hill last week in order to update lawmakers on the war’s progress. When Maher asked Hagel if it’s “a dirty trick on the American people when you send a military man out there to basically do a political sell job,” Hagel agreed.
“It’s not only a dirty trick, it’s dishonest, it’s hypocritical, it’s dangerous and irresponsible,” said Hagel. “This is not Petraeus’ policy, it’s Bush’s policy.”
Perhaps Hagel feels more liberated to speak freely following his announcement last week that he would retire from the Senate.
