Almost all of the Boston Bruins were excited to come to Washington a day early and visit President Obama and the White House, where they were honored on Monday for last year’s Stanley Cup championship. Not star goalie Tim Thomas, apparently. Thomas didn’t accompany his teammates because, according to a statement he released on his Facebook page, he thinks “the federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.”
“Everybody has their own opinions and political beliefs and [Thomas] chose not to join us,” Bruins team president Cam Neely said. “We certainly would have liked to have him come and join us, but that’s his choice. Obviously it’s not a choice that most of the guys [made].”

So it was a strong statement. But Thomas claims his snub of the White House visit had nothing to do with a specific political party, blaming both Republicans and Democrats for the current state of the country. Presumably, the league’s best goalie won’t abandon his crease during Tuesday’s game.
