“Congratulations!” was the first thing the Fines heard, which is how they discovered that their film, “War/Dance,” had been nominated for an Oscar in the feature documentary category.
“We’re speechless, really,” Andrea said. “It’s almost a year to the day that it screened for the first time at Sundance.”
Sean said they’re trying to get in touch with the Ugandan children depicted in the movie, but “that means getting someone to go to them and tell them in person,” because they have no telephones.
Andrea added that the nomination was gratifying because it’s a “D.C. film.” She said she was constantly asked whether her crew hailed from New York or Los Angeles, and she had to correct them that most of the crew were Washingtonians.
So will they head to Hollywood for the big night? The writers’ strike makes it tough to plan, Sean said, but “if it happens, we will definitely be there.”
In the meantime, the couple say they’re working on documentaries on substance abuse and the “power of sport,” as well as a couple of feature-film ideas.
The newswasn’t all positive in the D.C. film community, however. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis’s film, “Nanking,” which was also favorably received at Sundance last year, didn’t make the Academy’s cut.
