Steve Spagnuolo’s day included a trip down Broadway, where he once again hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, standing next to the mayor of New York. And fans chanted, “Spags must stay!”
It ended in the Washington area, with one question remaining: will he be the next Redskins coach?

Spagnuolo, 48, was expected to meet with Redskins owner Dan Snyder last night and will again talk to him this morning. They also talked by phone Monday night, a conversation one source close to the situation termed “great.” One NFL source said Spagnuolo would not have a problem becoming a coach with his staff already in place.
He’s likely the last candidate the Redskins will interview for their head coaching vacancy, joining Jim Fassel, Steve Mariucci and Ron Meeks. Snyder was impressed by the Giants’ defense in Sunday’s 17-14 Super Bowl win over New England. As one NFL source said, Spagnuolo’s defense allowed 52 points in two games vs. the Patriots; that equals what Washington allowed in one.
“He can’t be in a better position,” the source said.
“It was a very interesting game,” Snyder said, “to see what I consider the most explosive offense I’ve seen in years and to just be slowed down like that was quite impressive.”
When asked if that was a good resume builder for Spagnuolo, Snyder said, “It would be for anybody.”
Snyder declined to say if a coach would be named by the end of the week, but a decision could come by Thursday or Friday.
“We’d like to have had it happen sooner,” Snyder said. “But we’ll finalize our decision in the near future. We told everyone up front we’d do a full process.”
Snyder also strongly hinted that the Redskins would play in the Hall of Fame game this August, a day before Art Monk and Darrell Green will be inducted.
