The combination of a lackluster opponent and a subdued midweek Verizon Center crowd nearly caused Super Tuesday to go super bad for listless Georgetown.
But thanks to a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds from DaJuan Summers, the sixth-ranked Hoyas managed a harder-than-it-should’ve-been 63-53 win over Big East cellar dweller South Florida in front of 8,316.
The Bulls (10-13, 1-9) made 10 of their first 13 shots and owned a 22-13 lead with 8:05 left in the first half. By that point the Hoyas (19-2, 9-1) had missed 15 of 20 field goal attempts, including their first six of the night.
However, South Florida missed its next nine from the field, and Georgetown claimed its first lead of the night, 24-22, on Jessie Sapp’s pull-up 3-pointer with 2:44 remaining in the half.
Summers scored Georgetown’s first 11 points and had 14 by halftime. Roy Hibbert chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and six blocks, and Sapp finished with 11 points and five assists.
Dominique Jones scored 15 points and Kentrell Gransberry had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Bulls.
