The Belanger-Federico Foundation and the Cool Kids Campaign welcomed more than 40 sports and entertainment celebs to its annual golf event, held recently at the Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix. This four-day event, sponsored by the Geppi Entertainment Museum, benefits lung-cancer research.
The fun started at the event’s “pairing” party, where golfers got a chance to size up their playing partners. It was great — and I mean great — to see former Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson, who blushed when reminded of his appearance as one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 2000. During dinner, former Baltimore Colt — and self-proclaimed funny man — Howard Stevens good-naturedly heckled a lot of the ex-athletes, causing another former Colt, Tom Matte, to exclaim: “It’s a short-guy thing, you know he was the smallest guy in the NFL.”
Spotted at this worthwhile event were Craig Pfiefer, Ed Speno, Pat Sudina and a very generous auction winner, John Mezzullo. His winning bid for a trip to the 2009 Marine Corps Celebrity Golf Classic in Camp Lejeune, N.C., was deja vu all over again. Mezzullo won the same trip last year.
“It was the most amazing, fun thing I’ve ever done. Now, I can do I again,” he said, much to the delight of foundation board advisers Peter Collier, Frank Remesch, Greg Smith, Edie Brown and Renee Townsley.
The event raised more than $50,000. Now that’s a hole in one.
Hello, anybody home?
For Ray and Jan Ferguson it’s been long, long wait for their dream retirement condo in the luxury Ritz-Carlton at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. In 2005 — when they signed on for their new residence — they were told completion would be in “early 2008,” which gave them plenty of time to sell their home.
Good news: Their house sold. Bad news: Their move-in date had been pushed back. They may be “homeless,” but the former Arnold residents — whose Christmas card last year showed them huddled around a fire barrel to keep warm — are still looking forward to their new digs and swear they haven’t made inquiries at the neighboring Harborview or Silo Point condos, like some of those still stuck in line for the Ritz-Carlton.
“Never,” said Ray Ferguson. “Good things are worth waiting for, and now that we’ve seen the almost-finished product, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
They hope to be in by Friday.
