NBC’s Mary Carillo has immersed herself into the Chinese culture while working at the Olympics. Sometimes, that means, um, trying new things. Like scorpions.
“My children, within seconds of me eating bizarre foods, both got dozens of text messages that said ‘Your mom just ate a scorpion on television,’” Carillo said in a conference call.
Her on-air partner, Cris Collinsworth, said, “Cris ain’t going for scorpions, man. But my favorite one of Mary’s pieces was when she had the acupuncture and she had the dude that rolled up the big cigar and it had a bit of an aroma to it and Mary thought it was the needle sticking in her arm that made her feel better.”
The strangest sport she’s covered?
“Hands down it is the Steeplechase,” she said. “It looks like everybody in the race has stolen a woman’s handbag and they’re running away over bushes and into their neighbors little plastic pools. You’re thinking to yourself how did they train?”
