Another day, another chance to pad the medals total for the United States. This time the opportunity comes in freestyle skiing Thursday, when the men’s aerials final will be contested in prime time.
American Ryan St. Onge, the 2009 world champion in aerials, sits in second place with a qualifying score of 240.67, while teammate Jeret “Speedy” Peterson is fifth at 237.34.

Both have a great shot to win considering two of the event’s other top stars failed to reach the finals. Defending Olympic gold medalist Han Xiaopeng of China and Belarus’ Anton Kushnir, a four-time winner on the aerials circuit this season, both fell during qualifying.
Expect big things from Peterson in the final — win or lose. His signature jump is called “Hurricane,” and if he lands it in competition, he almost certainly will reach the medal stand. It consists of five twists and three flips.
