Capitol Hill lately has become an open arena for music. Last week, Yeas & Nays reported that Sisqo gave a sneak preview of his as-yet-unreleased single at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee. On Wednesday at the Grammy’s on the Hill Gospel Brunch, gospel legends as well as congressional leaders joined together to sing “Oh Happy Day” in celebration of announcing September as Gospel Heritage Appreciation Month.

Gospel greats present included Edwin and Walter Hawkins — who performed at the White House the evening before — The Winans, Sandi Patty, Avalon, Martha Munizzi, Rance Allen of the Rance Allen Group and three-time DOVE award winner and new mother Natalie Grant.

“I won my election on gospel music,” Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, said. “I was befriended by the gospel music community in Houston. By being in the midst of such a large audience, people got to know me. There is something about elections, people like to vote for people they know and I got to be known by a community that is so vast and diverse.”

Lee also claimed it helped her get through the frustrations of taking the bar exam. “I felt like I had been saved,” she said of passing the exam. “I was singing ‘Amazing Grace’ when I passed the bar.”

Gospel and R&B great Patti LaBelle missed the brunch but did sing at the Lincoln Theatre on Wednesday night.
