His opponent Saturday stood 7 feet tall, but somehow, Towson power forward Dennard Abraham stood taller.
The 6-foot-8 senior scored 25 points with nine rebounds to keep the Tigers in a game in which they once trailed by 18. After missing two games earlier this year with a leg injury, Abraham declared his presence bycoming just two points shy of his career high.
“I?ve just been working on my shot the last couple of weeks,” Abraham said. “[Coach Jim Meil] told me to slow down, I was rushing my shot.”
Aside from his strong interior presence, Abraham showed touch from the outside. He hit a pair of 3-pointers at key situations in the game.
“Two very timely ones,” Temple coach Fran Dunphy said. “He just did a really good job. I was really impressed with Abraham, he?s a strong kid.”
Dunphy said Towson assistant coach Jay Eck had mentioned how much the team had missed Abraham in the team?s second and third games of the season. Abraham said after the game that he?s back now 100 percent healthy from those nagging injuries at the start of the season.
He was key in Towson?s comeback run from being down by 18 points, and finished 10-of-15 from the floor. When one of Temple?s big men fouled out late in the game, the Owls went with a five-guard lineup. Towson countered with four guards and Abraham.
“We wanted to take advantage of them on the other end,” Towson coach Pat Kennedy said. “And our guys did a great job getting the ball to Dennard.”
Abraham?s ability to hit the mid-range and long-rage jumpers led Kennedy to say he “never thought we were out of the game, I felt our guys were going to come back.”
Abraham played solid in the post, too, and hit some key hooks over Temple?s 7-foot center, Sergio Olmos. Olmos started strong, but finished with just eight points and two rebounds against Abraham.
“I expect to play big in these kind of games,” Abraham said.
He?ll have to come up big again Wednesday, as the Tigers visit Georgetown University.
“The coaching staff really doesn?t have to motivate us,” Abraham said. “We know we have to come out and play hard.”
