Welcome to this week’s edition of The Examiner’s “Tailgater of the Year” contest, where The Examiner selects the best tailgaters from college and professional football games in the Baltimore area.
This week, we were very impressed by the Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity at McDaniel College, which threw a party that included hot dogs, hamburgers and pulled pork before the Green Terror’s homecoming game against Gettysburg at Bair Stadium in Westminster.

THE TAILGATE
» This week’s winners: Joe Delenick and Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity
» Location: Bair Stadium, behind the north end zone
» Setup: A Grill under a 10-by-20-foot tarp tent, held together with duct tape and surrounded by four trucks.
» On the grill: Burgers, hot dogs and pulled pork. Side dishes included baked beans, pierogies and caramel apples. Since most Centennial Conference games start at 1 p.m., the early birds at Alpha Gamma Tau’s perch also feast on eggs, sausage and omelets.
» Best side dish: Taco dip
» Attendance: About 50 fraternity brothers, alumni and friends. The fraternity, founded in 1924, welcomed home their brothers from the Class of 1961 for the Green Terror’s homecoming games against Gettysburg.
» Experience: The Alpha Gamma Tau brothers set up at 8 a.m. for the homecoming game, which brings a bigger crowd, a parade, and a more festive atmosphere than most games. “Don’t think it’s like this every weekend,” Delenick, the fraternity’s president, said. “Homecoming is special.”
Think you can top Alpha Gamma Tau? Let us know where to find you when we attend Navy’s game against Notre Dame at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday. If you think you can tailgate with the best of them, please e-mail: [email protected].
We’re not looking for a small grill with hot dogs and hamburgers on it. We’re looking for extravagant, like a portable sports bar with menu items you can’t get for a dollar at a fast food joint.
We have high expectations for you, football fans. Please, don’t let us down. Think you have what it takes? At the end of the season, each of the weekly winners will be posted on baltimoreexaminer.com and the one with the most votes gets bragging rights and a prize.
