Even in Navy loss, this tailgate is winner

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Examiner’s “Tailgater of the Year” contest, where The Examiner selects the best tailgaters from college and professional football games in the Baltimore area.

This week, we were very impressed by a Navy fan who threw a huge party with a massive buffet for about 100 prior to the Midshipmen’s game against Notre Dame at M&T Bank Stadium. If his partygoers left hungry, it was their fault.

THE TAILGATE

•  This week’s winner: Kerry O’Shanick of Arnold

•  Location: Under the overpass in Lot B at M&T Bank Stadium

•  Setup: Grills, flags, banners, tables and chairs surrounded by the open trunks of 16 cars.

•  On the grill: A feast of waffles, venison, bison, hot apple cider, chicken and steak kabobs, doughnuts, cookies and taco dip.

•  Best side dish: Homemade chili

•  Attendance: About 100

•  Experience: O’Shanick founded “The O’Zone,” a tailgating group that attends every Navy home game and a few away games each season. The group tries to plan its menu around a theme each week based on the Midshipmen’s opposition, such as serving beef dishes when Navy plays a Texas-based team. “We’ve been doing something before games for about 25 years now,” O’Shanick said. “But Notre Dame is always a special game.”

Think you can top O’Shanick? Let us know where to find you when we attend the Ravens’ game against the Eagles at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday. If you think you can tailgate with the best of them, please e-mail: [email protected].

We’re not looking for a small grill with hot dogs and hamburgers on it.

We’re looking for extravagant, like a portable sports bar with menu items you can’t get for a dollar at a fast food joint.

We have high expectations for you, football fans. Please, don’t let us down.

Think you have what it takes? At the end of the season, each of the weekly winners will be posted on baltimoreexaminer.com and the one with the most votes gets bragging rights and a prize.
