The UMBC women’s basketball team got even younger this week.

Guard Chantay Frazier, the Retriever’s lone senior, left the team and withdrew from the university to tend to family matters in her hometown of Carthage, Miss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chantay and her family,” UMBC coach Phil Stern said. “It is our hope that she will someday return to the university to get her degree.”

Frazier averaged 10.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 42.5 percent last season after transferring from Seminole State College. She made 15 starts in 30 games. Stern also announced 6-foot-3 freshman forward Sarah Hill would join the Retrievers, as she recently completed the fall season as a middle blocker and outside hitter on the volleyball team.

UMBC freshman guard Katie Brooks also was named the America East Rookie of the Week for leading the Retrievers to a 2-1 mark by averaging 17.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game. In an 88-73 win over Northern Illinois, she scored 28 points in just 28 minutes and set a new school record with 16 made free throws. UMBC (2-2) heads to New Rochelle, N.Y., for the Iona Thanksgiving Classic, where it plays Western Michigan (0-3) on Saturday and Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-2) on Sunday.
