New love connection for MVP Ovechkin

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and his gorgeous Russian girlfriend, Katja, may have called it quits. But when you’re the highest-paid player in the NHL and you just won nearly every trophy that professional hockey has to offer, finding companionship isn’t too tough.

So it was that less than 24 hours after winning the MVP award and three other major trophies when Ovechkin arrived Friday night at  Teatro Goldoni for a party in his honor … with yet another gorgeous blonde. Her name is Alyonka Larionov, and sources close to the team tell us he met her, well, the night before at the awards ceremony in Toronto.

If her name sounds familiar, it could be because her father, Igor Larionov, won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings. Or because she and her sister, Diana, appeared on the most recent season of

“American Idol,” singing their way past the first round. Their MySpace page reveals they just recorded a song together, titled “Obsessed.”

In addition to Larionov, all of Ovechkin’s new hardware made the trip with him, too. Among the party guests who got a chance to look at it were Georgetown coach John Thompson III, his father, John Thompson Jr., D.C. United’s Ben Olsen and Caps great Rod Langway.

“This is good,” Ovechkin told the crowd, as owner Ted Leonsis beamed. “But I want to win the Stanley Cup with the Capitals.”

It was quite the day for Ovechkin. He was interviewed by ex-Capital Peter Bondra for the next issue of Capitol File. And then Mayor Fenty presented him a key to the city on the steps of the John A. Wilson

Building.
