Top Five: Low-scoring LSU games

Maybe it’s the humidity. Maybe it’s the Mardi Gras beads. Maybe it’s the noise in Death Valley. For whatever reason, LSU has a long history of low-scoring games with big stakes. Until Saturday’s 9-6 win over Alabama, most finished badly for LSU. Here are five: 5. Auburn 10, LSU 9 (2004) » Two days after Hurricane Ivan hit Alabama, a record crowd of 87,451 at Jordan-Hare Stadium saw Jason Campbell throw the winning touchdown pass with 1:14 left to upset the No. 5 Tigers. The September win turned out to be No. 14 Auburn’s closest call in an undefeated season.

4. Auburn 7, LSU 3 (2006) » The No. 6 Tigers gave up their first touchdown in four games, and it was all No. 3 Auburn needed despite 269 yards passing by LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

3. Alabama 3, LSU 0 (1979) » The No. 1 Crimson Tide rushed for 252 yards but couldn’t convert in the red zone. They still escaped Baton Rouge with their closest call in a 12-0 national championship season.

2. Notre Dame 3, LSU 0 (1970) » In November in South Bend, LSU pushed undefeated No. 2 Notre Dame to the brink before Joe Theismann’s 26-yard run set up a Scott Hempel field goal.

1. TCU 3, LSU 2 (1936) » In a battle of one-loss teams in the Sugar Bowl at Tulane Stadium, LSU got its only score when legendary TCU quarterback Sammy Baugh was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.
