Madison High assistant Morgan Spencer has been hired as the new baseball coach at Centreville High.

Spencer, 26, is a 1998 Madison graduate and a sports marketing teacher at the Vienna public school. He played four seasons at Greenville College (Ill.) before spending the past three as the Warhawks junior varsity coach.

“I’ve always wanted to be a varsity coach, but I also wanted to find the right school with the right administration,” said Spencer, who helped pitch Madison to a Liberty District tournament title as a senior. “And everything worked out for me at Centreville.”

Spencer replaces Jonathan Frohm, who resigned after the season. Centreville finished 10-10 and lost in the first round of the Concorde District tournament. Centreville activities director Jimmy Sanabria is on vacation and unavailable to comment.

Forgas in at Woodbridge

Dan Forgas is the new activities director at Woodbridge High, the school’s principal, Alan Ross, said Monday.

Forgas, 34, takes over for Michelle Heindrichs, who resigned effective July 1. Forgas was the original boys lacrosse coach at Forest Park High and has also coached at Hylton High and, most recently, taught at Lake Braddock High. Forgas is a 1989 Woodbridge graduate and served in the Marine Corps reserves after high school.

He is a veteran of the first Persian Gulf War, where he served before graduating from West Virginia. He also spent three seasons (2003-05) as an assistant lacrosse coach at the University of Mary Washington.

Locals struggle in Iowa

Three Washington area teams failed to advance out of pool play this past weekend at the U.S. Youth Soccer Association national championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

In three games each at James W. Cownie Soccer Park, two boys teams from the Bethesda Soccer Club, the U-14 Roadrunners and U-17 United, failed to post a win. In its third trip to the nationals, the Chantilly Inter Milan girls went 1-2 in U-19 competition.

Two-time national runner up Chantilly won its opening game, 1-0, over the Dallas Sting as Jessica Deegan scored the lone goal. But Chantilly’s hopes were extinguished with losses to Eclipse Select (Ill.), 2-1, and Colorado Rush, 3-0.
