A royal celebration

Congratulations to the Miami Heat for winning the NBA title. You could see the weight lifted off LeBron James after they won the title Wednesday night. James had to kneel down on the court and compose himself. This is why he left Cleveland, right?

So it’s no wonder he and the Miami Heat celebrated so hard the other night. What a journey.

Wait, you mean that wasn’t the final? You mean it was just a higher seed beating a fading champion in the second round? You mean James still hasn’t done anything he hasn’t already done?

Yet you would never know it from the reaction to Miami eliminating Boston. This is not to take anything away from the Heat or James. Like him or not, James is an amazing player who plays basketball the right way. And the Heat are playing well, but better than Dallas? Chicago? We’ll find out.

Yes, Boston was a nemesis for James. And we get that it has been a long three years for him in the postseason.

But this is not the same Celtics team that beat his Cavaliers last season — perhaps if he hadn’t played disinterested in Game 5 that wouldn’t have happened — and in 2008. Their point guard, Rajon Rondo, was hurting. They’re aging champions possibly on their last legs. James might be in the same spot had he re-signed with Cleveland or gone to New York.

A little history lesson here. The Cavaliers once struggled to get past Detroit, a proud champion. Then in 2007, James dominated the Pistons and led the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals.

Oh, and let’s not get too drippy over his apology to Cleveland. The time for that was long ago, not after what is one of the best nights of your life. Sort of like telling your ex-wife you’re sorry after telling your new supermodel wife “I do.”

At his previous outlandish celebration, James said he came to Miami to win “not one, not two …” but seven or eight titles. He didn’t mention Boston. So let’s wait until he’s done something he hasn’t done before. Like win a title.
